Painful abscess tooth

Having a toothache is no fun because it can be completely painful! One type of dental toothache is having a abscess tooth. It is the most painful thing in the world! I should know because I had two teeth in my mouth abscessed from not taking better care of my teeth. It can be easily preventable by going to the dentist every six months and getting your teeth cleaned by the dentist every year.

How do you get abscess tooth?

People wonder how your tooth begin to abscess? Well first, if you do not treat your cavity or crack tooth right away the infection in the tooth will hit the nerve. Then the tooth will create a puss because it is trying to fight the infection in the tooth. The puss is very foul smelling and creates the tooth to hurt and cause your gums around the tooth to start swelling. I remember waking up one morning looking like a chipmunk on the side of my face! Once the pus breaks through the gums it creates a boil that looks like a pimple. Sometimes the boil may burst and the puss will break through which creates a awful taste in your mouth and creates bad breath. But the good thing about the pus breaking through the gum is it gives you some relief from the pain. Now just because the pus came out doesn't mean your abscess tooth is completely gone away; it will keep coming back until you either have a root canal or have the tooth extracted.

How to control the pain

Abscess tooth can be unbelievably painful! But you can control it somewhat by doing these:

  1. Do warm salt water rinses several times a day.
  2. Use a pain reliever like orajel around the tooth.
  3. Get some pain medicines from the store or dentist.
  4. Have your dentist prescribe antibiotics to control the abscess for awhile until you get a tooth extraction or root canal.

Don't keep a abscess tooth in your mouth too long because eventually the tooth will die and you will lose the tooth. Also you can get a disease in your gums called Periodontal Disease which can create receding gums and teeth lost. In some cases, having an abscess tooth can lead you into becoming very ill and sometimes leads to death.

It can be pretty expensive to get a root canal but you can see if your dentist excepts payment plans. I had insurance but it didn't cover root canals because I haven't had my insurance over a year, so I applied for a discount insurance card to save money on my dental bill.

Did you know that after a few years of skipping dentist appointments due to financial constraints, some people are heading back for more work at higher costs. Consequently, those $100 cavities have turned into $1,000 root canals. Meanwhile, nearly half of all Americans do not have any type of dental coverage, according to the National Association of Dental Plans. Discount dental plans help people save 10% to 60% on most of their dental care procedures.

So remember it can be easily preventable by brushing your teeth at least twice a day, floss, not eating a lot of sweets, and going to your dental check ups every 6 months to have your teeth checked.

I can totally identify with this hub, because I've lost teeth to periodontal disease, and could have written this myself. However I am not a smart as you were, I still prefer to treat my gum disease myself. Will I ever learn. Very informative hub.

@fastfreta

The dentist was telling me I was getting close to having Periodontal disease which scares me to death because I am too young to have teeth lost. I now keep up with my dental appointments. I'm glad you enjoyed my hub!
